Roxanne's Birth Story Part 1

Hey There!👋🏻 Today I wanted to share part 1 of Roxanne's birth story, because the end of pregnancy is often one of the hardest and least talked about parts.

By her third trimester, Roxanne had officially finished midwifery school.

After years of training, studying, and supporting others through birth, it was finally time to shift her focus fully to baby prep and waiting for her own little one to arrive.

In those final weeks, Roxanne spent a lot of time moving because it genuinely felt good. She stayed consistent with our birth prep circuits and workouts, but she was also doing a lot of mental preparation. There was an added layer to this waiting period because I had an upcoming Disney trip for the marathon we were supposed to run together last March… until someone read too many smut books and got pregnant 😂.

The last few days of her pregnancy came with a lot of confusing prodromal labor, something I dealt with during my last pregnancy too. Maybe it is a fourth baby thing. We knew it probably was not true labor, but we were still hopeful he might arrive before I had to leave for my trip.

We were not trying to force labor.

We wanted him to come when he was ready, even if that meant while I was gone, but I was still really sad at the possibility of missing his birth. We focused on walking, relaxing, and staying grounded. A close friend did some acupuncture when Roxanne was feeling more contractions, and she even did a relaxation spot between my eyes to help calm my own anxiety about it all....

And then the day before I left for my trip, she was in labor!! Or so we thought…. It ended up being some more intense prodromal labor. The entire team was at her house ready for a baby, and after a walk with labor still not shifting to active labor, Roxanne asked for a cervical check with a membrane sweep to see if that would progress things. But, her midwife found she was only 1cm and 30% effaced. Roxanne and I cried realizing this was prodromal labor and baby Harvey was not going to be born before I left for my trip. And there was a real possibility I was going to miss the birth—the first birth we would miss of each others.

Then each day of my trip passed, and Roxanne was still pregnant! I ran the Walt Disney World Half Marathon, and she was still pregnant. Then I did the marathon the next day as a part of the Goofy Challenge.

We were feeling confident that I would make it back in time! I was planning to come back Monday night, worried that flying back the same day as the marathon would be miserable. But we felt confident that I would be back in time! Only one day to go.

And then Roxanne woke up Monday just after midnight to what she thought was her water breaking.

Stay tuned for part 2 coming tomorrow!

This part of pregnancy is exactly why preparation matters so much. Not just physically, but mentally too.

This is also why our prenatal fitness and birth prep programs are designed the way they are. We offer two prenatal programs that sync directly to your current week of pregnancy. One is a self paced strength program for those who want to lift weights during pregnancy, because yes, lifting during pregnancy is safe and can actually improve your pregnancy experience and birth when done correctly. There is even new research showing that CrossFit style training during pregnancy does not increase the likelihood of having a tight pelvic floor or complications during pregnancy or labor related to exercise.

We also offer a video based prenatal workout program if you prefer to follow along with guided workouts. Both programs sync to your current week of pregnancy and include flexible options, either a one time payment for lifetime access or a monthly option so you can grab what you need and cancel anytime.

As part of our new baby birth sale, you can save on all of our prenatal programs now.

If you'd like to join us in our celebration, use code HARVEY20 to get 20% off any of our online courses and fitness programs or up to 35% off bundles!

Tomorrow, I will share part 2 of Roxanne’s birth story... did I make it??

Hey there! Last week I shared how my motherhood fitness journey has shifted. For almost a decade, my training cycles revolved around preparing for pregnancy, prenatal fitness and birth prep, then postpartum recovery. There was always another restart coming. And now there isn’t. This might sound repetitive at this point, but I am definitely complete with four kids. I do not want more babies. But I am still sad that my pregnancy and birth chapter is closing. With every chapter shift in my life,...

Hey there! I hope your week has been going well. I’m on my way back from Los Angeles after teaching our pelvic mechanics workshop this past weekend. It was such a great group, and I’m excited to share that we’ve added another workshop to the schedule in Asheville, NC this fall. We are also working on another LA workshop for November for our California folks who missed this last one. See our full workshop schedule In addition to teaching, I also ran the Disneyland Half Marathon. I snagged a...

Hey there! This week’s newsletter is all about returning to running after pregnancy. I took about a 10 year hiatus from racing after competing in college and into my early adulthood. Running was still part of my life, but getting back into racing felt hard as I navigated pregnancy after pregnancy. Running often felt really uncomfortable during pregnancy, and then once I finally felt ready to train and race again, I also felt ready to have another baby. It was a beautiful cycle, but it meant...
