What we've changed our minds about after 10 years of supporting births

Hey there! Over the past 10 years of MamasteFit, Roxanne and I have really grown as professionals. The way we approach prenatal fitness, birth preparation, birth support, and postpartum recovery has evolved so much over the years. We will always be learning and evolving, which can sometimes be a hard thing to accept.

Because if you're constantly learning, that means the way you do things today may be different from the way you did them five years ago. On one hand, it can make you wonder: does that mean we screwed over a bunch of people when we had a different understanding? Should we wait until we're experts before supporting anyone? Or should we just keep doing what we've always done instead of admitting there may be a better way?

This can be especially challenging when you work in healthcare, fitness, or birth work, where there are plenty of examples of practices that were once considered routine but later turned out to be less effective than we thought, or even harmful in some situations. Growth requires humility. It requires being willing to look at new information, new observations, and new experiences and ask, "What if there is a better way to understand this?"

New Podcast: Our Growth as Birth Workers

In our latest podcast episode, Roxanne and I talk about how we have grown as birth workers over the years after supporting thousands of births in person and thousands more of you through our online courses and fitness programs. It's also a topic we're discussing inside our Professional Mentorship Community this month as we explore how our understanding of pelvic mechanics continues to evolve and how these shifts may help professionals better support their clients through movement.

New Blog: Pelvic Mechanics for Birth: New Ideas

This topic also inspired my latest blog post, where I break down five different ways Roxanne and I have expanded our understanding of pelvic mechanics over the years.

We started with a simple foundation: the pelvis moves, and movement matters during birth.

What we've come to appreciate over time is that the pelvis is far more nuanced than we originally realized. There isn't one movement that opens an entire pelvic level.

  • The inlet appears to have both anterior and posterior components.
  • The midpelvis may have upper and lower levels that require different movement strategies.
  • And we've become much less focused on forcing internal rotation for the outlet and much more interested in helping clients find movement options, relaxation, and adaptability during pushing.

Some of these realizations completely challenged things we thought we understood years ago. You can read the full blog here.

And I wanted to say thank you - we had an amazing, unmedicated, delightful, self-directed, easy birth. I did your program until 39+1 and our baby girl arrived at 39+6! One hour in the clinic - we arrived with 9cm and I did the hip shifted pelvic tilts a lot in the opening phase! I had no issues with my pelvic girdle pain in pregnancy and was so powerful! So, THANK YOU for all the power & strength you gave us!

One of my favorite parts of teaching is hearing the observations and experiences of other professionals. We have learned so much from conversations with readers, students, doulas, nurses, midwives, physical therapists, and fitness professionals over the years.

Recently, one reader emailed us after hearing that an anterior pelvic tilt opens the outlet. They shared that they rarely observe clients intuitively moving into a significant anterior pelvic tilt while pushing. Instead, they more commonly see clients finding neutral leg positions with a neutral or slightly tucked pelvis. We ended up having a really fun conversation exploring why that might be happening and what other mechanics could be influencing the outlet.

These conversations are exactly why we continue to learn. The more births we observe and the more experiences we share, the more dots we can connect together.

If you have a new observation, perspective, or realization about birth, movement, pelvic mechanics, or labor support, hit reply and let me know. Some of our best discussions, podcast topics, and teaching concepts have come directly from conversations with all of you.

Join us in NYC this weekend!

If you're near New York City, we'd love to continue the conversation in person at our Pelvic Mechanics Workshop in Brooklyn on June 6th. We'll spend the day diving into pelvic mechanics, birth preparation, labor positioning, and hands-on strategies to support clients throughout pregnancy and labor.

Take $50 off to come hang out with us this Saturday! We are most excited for pizza and bagels, but talking with you all is a close second lol.

Pelvic Mechanics for Birth Workers & Movement Pros: June 6, 2026, Brooklyn NYC

I'm a birth doula and attended Mamaste Fit's Pelvic Mechanics Workshop. The wealth of knowledge was incredible! I couldn't believe how fast the day flew by - as well as how fast my fingers were flying trying to take notes haha. Everything Gina had to say was just full of wisdom and intelligence and I am so grateful to have soaked it in. I am especially excited to have learned great exercises to help my clients prenatally with not only aches and pains, but to prepare them for a smoother labor. This course goes beyond the typical inversion & side-lying release that I'm used to. WAY beyond it! If you want to learn that plus details of how babies move throughout the levels of the pelvis during labor and how to help influence said babies - this course is for you. :) Thank you so much, Gina and Roxanne!

Stay Strong in Pregnancy and Motherhood!

MamasteFit is one of the only fitness training facilities in the country that exclusively works with in-person prenatal and postnatal fitness clients—and also provides hands-on birth support. Our prenatal and postpartum fitness programs aren’t random “safe” modifications pulled from the internet; they’re designed specifically for this stage of life, tested and refined with our in-person clients, and approved by our in-house pelvic floor physical therapists.

Prenatal Fitness Programs

Our prenatal programs were created to keep you strong and pain-free throughout pregnancy with specialty exercises to help you prepare for birth with pelvic opening, pelvic floor, and birth prep movements.

We offer two prenatal fitness options:

  • Self-Paced Prenatal Strength Program: Perfect for those who enjoy working out independently. You'll receive structured strength workouts through our training app, complete with exercise demonstrations, coaching cues, and modifications. The program includes strength training, pelvic stability work, mobility exercises, and birth preparation movements to support you throughout pregnancy.
  • Video-Based Prenatal Fitness Program: Perfect if you prefer guided workouts. Simply press play and follow along with us through strength workouts, mobility sessions, core training, pelvic stability workouts, and birth preparation exercises designed specifically for pregnancy.

Both programs are synced to your week of pregnancy, so the workouts progress alongside your changing body from the first trimester through birth. Whether you're newly pregnant or approaching your due date, you'll have workouts designed specifically for your stage of pregnancy.

And unlike many pregnancy fitness subscriptions, both programs include lifetime access, so you can revisit the workouts during future pregnancies whenever you need them.

Postpartum Fitness Programs

Our postpartum fitness programs were carefully designed alongside our in-person clients and pelvic floor physical therapists to create a smooth transition from healing and recovery back to exercise. Rather than leaving you wondering what to do after your six-week appointment, our programs guide you step-by-step from early rehabilitation through strength training, impact activities, and returning to the activities you love.

Want to see what our postpartum workouts are like before joining? Preview a free postpartum workout and experience how we help moms rebuild strength, confidence, and function after birth.

Beyond Postpartum Strength and Running Program

And if you are beyond the first 6–9 months postpartum and ready to continue strength training with us, check out our Beyond Postpartum Strength Program.

This is the exact strength program I personally use to stay strong in motherhood while continuing to support my pelvic floor and core. The program moves through 6–8 week training cycles with new workouts each phase. Every cycle focuses on a different training goal, including strength endurance, maximal strength, power, and stability so you can continue progressing long after the postpartum phase.

Beyond Postpartum also includes optional running programs designed to pair with the strength training. Whether you're working toward your first 5K, returning to racing, building endurance, or training for longer distances, you'll have structured run programming that complements your lifting schedule.

Not sure if it's the right fit? Start with a free 7-day trial and explore the workouts, training app, and community before committing.

Hey there! This past weekend Roxanne and I ran a 10K race together, which is Roxanne's first postpartum running race! And she did it without having any prolapse symptoms! I promise she signed up on her own with absolutely no pressure or coercion from me whatsoever... If you've been around here for a while, you probably know that Roxanne and I both have prolapse. At one point, that diagnosis felt really scary. Like many of you, we were told that if we had prolapse, we might need to give up...

Hey there! In this week's newsletter, I want to break down our approach to pelvic floor balance. It's been a game changer for our clients in helping them feel better in their bodies, and it's how I personally approach lifting heavy weights (for me at least, lol) and racing half marathons with zero pelvic floor symptoms despite having a grade 2 prolapse and four births. But first, a recap from our weekend! But, first a recap on our weekend! Roxanne and I just got back from a weekend of...

Hey there! In this week’s newsletter, I’m going to be breaking down the four movement patterns you need to be able to do to create space within your pelvis. Understanding these four movement patterns can really help simplify birth preparation. First, it’s important to know that there is no one movement that creates space through the entire pelvis, and the pelvis does actually have movement capability! There are four pelvic joints that allow for movement and positional changes that can...
