Hey! Roxanne here this week!
We just got back from a fun-filled runDisney weekend, where I was able to do my FIRST Disney challenge race weekend. I have done one other runDisney marathon back in 2014, but this was a whole new experience after having kids and getting back into running.
It was so much more fun than I was expecting, with dressing in costumes, and ALL THE GLITTER!! I am so proud of my body and the workouts I have done that have gotten me to the point where I can run 22.4 miles in 3 days and still go to the parks afterward and enjoy family time!
I was near tears at mile 11 of the half-marathon because I realized I was actually doing this!
How did I train for these races while working as a midwife and raising four kids? You may be wondering
I have limited time to get in workouts and runs. Realistically, I can do 2-3 days a week when I have time to work out, which differs from others, given my life priorities and demands.
I work as a midwife 2-3 days a week outside the home. On some of those days, I am able to get in a run or a workout when no one is in labor, but on others, I am not. I have had to get really creative to fit in workouts and to get to the point in my running and prolapse journey.
I sometimes only get in a 20-30-minute strength session, or I have to end my runs early because I need to tend to children. This has made progress slower, but I am proud I have stuck with it and the hard work paid off at Disney!
The program I have been following is our Postpartum Return to Running Program, which I started at 6 weeks postpartum. This has helped me build the strength needed to get back to running pain-free and with no prolapse symptoms for the past THREE postpartums! Our program starts with a focus on strength-based movements and gradually introduces running at week 7.
One of the reasons I am so proud of this accomplishment is that I have a prolapse that was diagnosed after having my first baby. I had A LOT of symptoms that impacted my daily life for the first 6 months postpartum with my first baby when it came to working out. It took me time, but I eventually got back to running after each of my next three postpartums!
Gina, my sister and founder of MamasteFit, and I discuss running with prolapse and our journeys in more detail on our recent podcast this week. Watch it below!
This is our personal experience, and it may differ from your own return-to-running journey, but we offer some tips for getting back to running in our podcast episode above. Maybe to the point you join us on the runDisney courses!
See you next month!
Roxanne
P.S. Shout-out to my parents, who came with me while I was solo parenting my 4 children, so I could run these Disney races!
P.P.S. Are you training for a marathon, too? We have a specific program for that! Check it out here
