Pregnancy Comfort Matters and Here Is Why
One of the biggest messages in our workshops this weekend was this:
a more comfortable pregnancy is not just a bonus… it is a sign that your body is moving well, your pelvis is balanced, and your muscles are working together instead of fighting each other!
Better comfort usually means better mobility, better pelvic floor balance, and a body that can shift and adapt as pregnancy progresses. And while this absolutely supports an easier labor later on, comfort itself is a meaningful goal too! This whole journey is more than simply making it out alive. You deserve to feel good, capable, and satisfied with your pregnancy and birth experience.
A huge part of this comfort comes from understanding your natural postural tendencies. Everyone has them. They are not bad. But when we sink too deeply into these patterns or cannot move out of them, discomfort can show up quickly… especially during pregnancy.
Here is a video from our pelvic mechanics course that breaks down the impacts of posture on pregnancy!
The most common pattern we see goes like this:
Most of us load into the right leg. When that happens, the entire pelvis and pelvic floor follow predictable shifts:
- The right hip tucks under (posteriorly tucks, PPT)
- The pelvis rotates inward and adducts (IR and ADD)
- The right anterior pelvic floor and abdominal wall become overactive
- The left hip rotates forward and opens (ER/ABD/APT)
- The left posterior pelvic floor tightens to stabilize
And remember… your rib cage ALWAYS responds to your pelvic position, and vice versa. They are a team!
During pregnancy, this can show up as:
On the flip side, some people default toward a lot of external rotation in both legs. When this happens:
- The pubic arch can narrow
- The posterior pelvic space decreases
- Baby may also struggle to engage
This is why addressing mobility and pelvic balance NOW matters so much. Improving how your pelvis moves does not just prepare you for labor. It improves your day-to-day comfort and quality of life!
For those who have more left sided SI joint pain, the issue is often difficulty shifting weight to the left. If your pelvis cannot move into that left IR/ADD/PPT position, it may also impact baby’s ability to rotate out of the pelvis toward the end of labor.
So again… comfort now is worth prioritizing because it sets the groundwork for labor later. When your pelvis moves well, your pelvic floor balances out, and your rib cage supports that movement, everything becomes more efficient.
This is exactly what we teach in our Pelvic Mechanics Courses (online and in person) and what we build into every workout in our prenatal fitness programs. There is so much more to birth prep than deep squats and butterfly pose. And there is so much more to pelvic floor training than squeezing harder with Kegels.
When we support postural balance, rib cage alignment, pelvic floor mobility, and functional strength, comfort increases. Movement improves. Labor mechanics become more efficient.
And the results show up in our clients every single week. Many share that they feel significantly better this pregnancy than previous ones, and the biggest difference is simply following our programming. Our PT partners even tell us that patients who combine PT with our workouts make faster progress and move more freely thanks to how intentionally everything is designed.
Pregnancy comfort matters because YOU matter. And supporting your body now pays off in every stage of your journey.
